Antonio Clavé (1913–)
Antonio Clave is one of the world's most renowned artists. Born in Barcelona in 1913, the artist studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes there. In 1939, he moved to Paris where he was influenced by the abstract works of Picasso. Clave has designed sets and costumes for operas, ballets (including a series of works for Roland Petit), plays and films ("Hans Christian Andersen"). He began working in collage in the 195D's and in recent years has focused on low relief and sculpture.
In 1977, Clave was one of eight internationally known artists commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera Association to create limited edition graphics and fine art posters depicting great operas for the Metropolitan Opera Fine Art Portfolio, published by Circle Fine Art.
Clave has received numerous awards, including the UNESCO Prize for engraving at the Biennale, Venice; Prize of Kamakura at Engraving Biennale, Tokyo and Matarazzo Prize at Biennale of Sao Paulo. His works have been exhibited at the Musee Picasso, Antibes, France; Palais de la Mediterrane'e, Nice; Museo de Arte Moderno, Bilbao, Spain; Galerie Drouant-David, Paris and Galerie Beyeler, Basle, as well as other prestigious galleries and museums. Museum collections include the Tate Gallery, London; Musee National d'Art Moderne, Petit Palais, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and Musee Picasso, Antibes, France.
