Eugenio Carmi (1920–)
Eugenio Carmi's innovative talents are apparent in his paintings and graphics which combine the geometric simplicity of a Russian Supremacist painting with the superb coloration of a color field canvas. Born in Genoa in 1920, the artist taught art at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and University of California, Los Angeles, during the 1960's.
He has been awarded numerous prize including the international Cracow Biennale award, international Triennale of Wroclaw award and Prix International Biella (International Exhibition of Graphics, Ljubljana, Yugoslavia). In 1980, the Italian Cultural Institute, New York hosted an exhibition of paintings and a series of limited edition large cloth embroideries, "Ariadne Threads." His unique works were also featured in a one-man show in 1980 at Jack Gallery New York.
Among the galleries and museums which have featured Carmi's works in one-man exhibitions are the Institute of Contemporary Art, London; Musee National d'Art Modern, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, Lodz, Poland; Museum of Esbjerg, Denmark; Museum of Architecture, Wroclaw, Poland and Italian Cultural Institute, New York.
