Heddy Kun (1937–)

Born in Zagreb, Kun was separated from her parents during World War II. Hiding with her brother and grandmother, she endured frightening experiences which ignited her passion for freedom and life, two themes which shine throughout her work.

After her parents perished in the Holocaust, Kun was raised by her grandparents in Budapest. It was there that she attended and graduated from the Academy of Art. In 1956, Kun left for Israel, where she married Zeev Kun and furthered her studies with Tzvi (Miklos) Adler. Here she developed her unique impressionist style with Cezanne-like influences.

In the beginning of Kun’s career, her work primarily consisted of charcoal drawings and portraits of children. However during the 1960s, she started to explore oil painting, which allowed her a wide venue to express freedom, color, and the vitality of Israel’s landscapes.

Kun has an extraordinary sense of color, which is discernible in her still-life work with flowers as well as her landscapes. Her paintings have been described as simple, direct, light filled pieces in which the artist observes and attempts to capture the fleeting movement of light. Exemplified in glowing backgrounds, rich constellations of colors, and various application methods is the connecting thread of the light that binds the artist’s work together.

Kun’s first exhibition was at the Academy of Art where she completed her studies. Since then, she has taken part in over 60 exhibitions in Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France, and Germany. She has had one-man shows in galleries all over Israel such as the Rosenfeld Gallery, Tel Aviv; the Feferberg Gallery, Jerusalem; and the Weizman Gallery, Beer-Sheva. Kun’s artwork continues to be displayed in many galleries and exhibitions and can be found in private collections the world over.

In celebration of Kun’s 50+ year career, an article described her work as "bestowing a magical atmosphere on the pastoral scenes of paths, flowers, and trees. The paintings invite the viewer to absorb the light and enjoy the ambiance which the paintings emanate. A painter who describes the Melodies of the Israeli Landscape, Heddy renders various places in the country including the Galilee, Jerusalem and the seas in her own vibrant vision."

"The flowers she paints are flowers she collected in her mind through her memories of beauty."

(Lawrence Schwartz, Art Critic)

"To walk in the paths of your paintings is like walking in nature and to be amazed from the surrounding view."

(Naava Shmueli)
