Jay Lefkowitz (1952–)
Artist Jay Lefkowitz was born on August 10, 1952 and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Lefkowitz attended the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture. In 1975, Lefkowitz traveled to Paris and then moved to Carrara, Italy where he honed his skills in marble by working alongside prominent Italian stone sculptors. In 1982 he returned to Detroit area. He attended Wayne State University and earned his Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking in 1998.
Lefkowitz creates artwork in a variety of media including watercolor and acrylic paintings, original graphic works, and sculpture in steel, granite and marble. His bold, abstract paintings, prints and sculpture have garnered great notoriety for the artist. He has participated in numerous exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including one-man shows at the Hooks-Epstein Gallery, Houston, Texas (1979, 1982, 1984); Lee Hoffman Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan (1979); Zerosf Gallery, Morristown, New Jersey (1983); Schweyer-Galdo Gallery, Birmingham, Michigan (1983, 1984, 1986); Robert L. Kidd Assoc. Galleries, Birmingham, Michigan (1987, 1989, 1993); and the Janice Charach Epstein Museum, West Bloomfield, Michigan (1999).
Lefkowitz has been widely commissioned for large scale sculpture installations for numerous institutions and private collections including the Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio (1974); Mason; Deupi and Associates for the World Bank, Washington, D.C. (1986); State of Michigan for the New Baltimore Welcoming Center, New Baltimore, Michigan (1992); Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan (1992); St. Clair Community College, Port Huron, Michigan (1993); William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Michigan (1994); and Botsford General Hospital, Farmington, Michigan (1999).
