Martin Broadbent (1944–)
Martin Broadbent was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in 1944 and educated at Mirfield Grammar School. He studied Fine Art at Leeds College of Art and Design from where he graduated in 1967. An early career in teaching in the North of England was followed by a move to London in 1970 where he qualified as an Art Therapist and worked in special education for a number of years.
An interest in Fine Art Printmaking began to develop in the 1972 and when in 1977 the opportunity arose to work as a lithographer and printer at Sky Editions Studios in London, he took the decision to leave teaching and make a professional commitment to the medium.
He established his own studio in 1979 to work with artists and fine art publishers at the Ingham Press in East London, from where he moved to Gloucestershire in 1981. During the 1980’s his own prints were published by Christie's Contemporary Art and Pallas Graphics Ltd. and he received a number of important commissions for paintings from leading industrial clients including the Central Electricity Generating Board.
His time is now divided between his home and studio in Devon, where he lives with his wife and two children. “For my figure studies I use charcoal and pencil. I use pastels for my flower paintings, which combine softness of texture with the clarity of colour. The medium of lithography allows me to translate these qualities directly into print.”
