Nelson De La Nuez (1959–)

Nelson De La Nuez is one of the most innovative Pop artists of today. His unique blend of Pop and Surrealism has brought him to the forefront of the art world, gaining him worldwide recognition. Since launching his POP Americana Series to celebrate the 20th century world of Pop Culture, Nelson De La Nuez has become one of the most popular, collected contemporary artists today. His work is in a league of its own, being fresh, satirical and original. His unique blend of Pop and Surrealism entices the viewer to look twice to see all of the layers hidden underneath, perhaps in the subconscious mind.

De La Nuez’s juxtaposition of everything Pop reflects America’s rich culture and history, showing the images that have withstood the test of time to tell the stories of our past. His combinations of historical moments in time come from his being inspired by past and present history, art history, his vast study of all religions, astronomy and, of course, American Pop Culture. People love that his art is bold and outspoken, both in color and often in subject matter. The artist is known for his distinctive style called “Art on the Edge,” which is creating art on all sides of the canvas.

Nelson De La Nuez has used his hands to create works of art that entertain and delight people throughout the world. He has used acrylics, watercolors, oils, pens, crayons and colored pencils, pastels, charcoals, and every type of paper and canvas. When he first began to create collages, he found that he loved juxtaposing images that one would not expect to see occupying the same space. Since a young age, colors and the ways they affect people have also intrigued Nelson. He has explored the juxtaposition of colors as well in his studies, including how they influence peoples’ emotions.

De La Nuez studied art history at Boston University and in 1982 became quite taken with the French Impressionist, and Post-Impressionist periods, particularly the work by Edward Manet, entitled “The Picnic,” or “Luncheon on the Grass.” The image of three men fully dressed having a picnic with a naked woman struck him as odd and interesting. Through the art of collage, he began exploring the use of people and objects out of place with each other and their surroundings. He incorporated the works of the “masters,” such as Van Gogh and Picasso and paid tribute to them through his humor.

De La Nuez's artwork has the right combination of social and cultural relevance mixed with emotional ties, all of which have brought him to the forefront of the art world. Galleries, museums and prestigious art collectors have embraced his work throughout the U.S., Europe, Alaska, Canada and Australia. He is listed on the “Who’s Who List of the Most Collected Artists of Our Time” for the premiere auction houses and his artwork is collected by many well-known, prominent people in the entertainment industry.

You’ll also find his work decorating actors’ trailers on film and television show sets.
