Paul Calle (1928–)
Paul Calle was born in New York in 1928 and attended Pratt Institute. In 1970, Pratt alumni honored the artist by awarding him the Contemporary Achievement Medal for the excellence of his works. Museum collections include the National Air and Space Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Phoenix Art Museum and the Pacific Northwest Indian Center, Spokane. His paintings and graphics have been exhibited in museums in Poland, Russia and Sweden, as well as the Smithsonian Institution and National Gallery of Art, in Washington, D.C.; Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, N.Y.; Museum of the Southwest, Midland, TX. and other museums and galleries.
Calle is known to many Americans for his paintings and sketches marking the achievements of the U.S. space programs and his designs for U.S. postage stamps, including commemoratives of Robert Frost, General Douglas MacArthur and "Moon Walk." A die proof of "Moon Walk," which celebrates man's first steps on the moon, was taken to the moon and cancelled there by the astronauts.
